How do you turn a grand opening into an unforgettable experience?
PROJECT OVERVIEW
During my time at The Villages, I led creative strategy and creative direction for grand opening experiences designed to give new recreation destinations their own identity and make each opening feel like an experience—not just a ribbon-cutting.
Each project started with the same question:
What story can we tell that makes this place feel special?
The answer was different every time.
The Senior Games became an Olympics-inspired opening ceremony. St. Tropez Recreation Center took its cues from the character and atmosphere of the French Riviera. Blanchard Recreation Center took flight with a hot-air-balloon-inspired celebration.
Three openings. Three different stories. One goal: create an experience that felt like it could only happen there.
DESIGN CHALLENGE
A new destination may have a physical identity, but a grand opening is one of the first opportunities to introduce that identity to the community in a meaningful way.
The challenge was to develop a creative concept for each opening that connected to the destination while giving residents a reason to show up, participate, explore, and celebrate.
Each project came with its own challenges, but The Senior Games presented an especially complex opportunity. The event was going through a rebrand that I creative directed while also moving to a new location: the new Olympia Recreation Center in the emerging Eastport area.
That meant introducing a refreshed identity, a new venue, a new environment, and a new chapter for the event—all at the same time.
The Olympics-inspired creative direction gave us a way to bring those pieces together through spectacle, celebration, and the traditions of an international sporting event while welcoming athletes into their new home.
St. Tropez Recreation Center and Blanchard Recreation Center presented different creative opportunities. Each needed its own identity and story while still working within the practical realities of a large-scale community event.
Each experience also had to work in the real world—across physical spaces, entertainment, messaging, signage, guest flow, event logistics, vendors, and the many moving pieces required to bring a large-scale opening to life.
MY ROLE
I led the creative strategy and concept development for each grand opening, creating distinct creative directions based on the personality, story, and physical character of each destination.
For The Senior Games, I developed an Olympics-inspired opening ceremony that brought the energy, spectacle, and traditions of an international sporting event into the community.
For St. Tropez Recreation Center, I developed a European-inspired concept that drew from the destination’s French Riviera influence and carried that feeling throughout the guest experience.
For Blanchard Recreation Center, I developed a hot-air-balloon-inspired concept centered on adventure, discovery, and taking flight.
I then worked across creative, marketing, recreation leadership, food and beverage and entertainment vendors, operations, purchasing, event operations, and photo and video teams to translate each concept into a finished guest experience.
That meant moving beyond the initial idea and working through the details of how the concept would actually live in the physical environment—from guest-facing visuals and signage to entertainment, interactive moments, circulation, and activities.
The work wasn’t just about coming up with the theme.
It was about making the idea work.
RESULTS
Turned three grand openings into distinct, story-driven experiences rather than treating them as variations of the same event.
Created creative identities that gave each recreation destination its own personality and gave residents a reason to engage with the opening beyond simply attending.
Connected each destination’s physical identity to the opening experience, carrying the creative concept through the environment, entertainment, messaging, signage, and guest-facing details.
Most importantly, transformed a functional milestone—a new building opening its doors—into an experience designed to make the moment feel meaningful, memorable, and worth celebrating.
Senior Games: An Olympic-Style Opening Ceremony
introduce the rebranded Senior Games in its new home at Olympia Recreation Center, I created an opening ceremony inspired by the spectacle and traditions of the Olympic Games.
The experience included a torch relay traveling across The Villages in golf carts, a parade of athletes, an official athlete announcement, and the lighting of a ceremonial cauldron.
Each element helped turn the opening into a moment of celebration while introducing the refreshed Senior Games identity and welcoming athletes into a new chapter for the event.
Blanchard Recreation Center, Grand Opening: Taking Flight
For Blanchard Recreation Center, I built the grand opening around a hot-air-balloon theme inspired by adventure, discovery, and taking flight.
Guests could step into the concept through hot-air-balloon-inspired photo opportunities, popcorn stations, and a scavenger hunt that encouraged them to explore the event and discover themed elements throughout the experience.
St. Tropez Recreation Center, Grand Opening: A Little Bit of France
For St. Tropez Recreation Center, I leaned into the destination’s European-inspired personality and created a grand opening that gave guests a chance to experience a little bit of France.
The event included opportunities to meet a mime, learn a French phrase, and take part in a European-inspired scavenger hunt.
The goal was to carry the St. Tropez story beyond the building itself and give guests something to discover, interact with, and remember.
