Crafting the narrative of Walt Disney’s animation odyssey amidst a backdrop of genuine works of art.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
We set out to create a new reason for guests to discover the relocated Art of Disney store at Epcot. The answer was to let the space tell a story of its own: a gallery within a gallery, bringing Disney art into conversation with the surrounding Epcot arts experience.
As Story & Writing Lead, I helped develop the creative concept and translate it into the guest experience, working with the creative and design teams to shape the story, messaging, and environmental details. The goal was to turn the retail environment into more than a place to shop—to create a destination where guests could discover, engage with, and experience Disney art within the larger cultural story of Epcot.
MY ROLE
- Environmental Storytelling & Writing: Developed interpretive plaque copy, headlines, and other guest-facing messaging, using concise storytelling to give context and meaning to the artwork and objects throughout the space.
- Research & Artifact Curation: Researched Walt Disney’s history to inform the selection and placement of props and artifacts, evaluating existing pieces and identifying objects that reinforced the story and visual experience of the environment.
RESULTS & IMPACT
- Retail Destination: Created a new reason for guests to explore the relocated Art of Disney store by transforming part of the merchandise environment into an intimate gallery experience.
- Disney Storytelling: Used artifacts, artwork, and interpretive storytelling to trace Walt Disney’s animation legacy and highlight the artists and creative traditions that followed.
- Discovery & Delight: Added moments of surprise and discovery to the retail environment, encouraging guests to pause, explore, and engage with the stories behind the merchandise.
